Trainee instructors must attend every day of the instructor training course.
This is necessary because:
- You are able to observe the course from the viewpoint of an instructor, rather than as a novice first aider.
- Each instructor has different teaching style and it is an advantage to experience at least two styles before becoming an instructor yourself.
- As it is a class of trainee instructors, the course which is conducted on the first 2 days imparts knowledge about the facilitation of each section, alternate scenarios, and common delivery issues and questions which are not covered in a public course.
- Important networking and group cohesion occurs over the course.
Ideally, a trainee instructor would have attended an MHFA course prior to attending instructor training as it is beneficial to experience the course before undertaking training on how to deliver it. It is also beneficial for the trainee instructor to have practiced their mental health first aider skills prior to attending their instructor training course if possible.
Ideally the course should be in the previous 3 years to ensure they have seen the most recent edition and completed the accreditation to have experience of the full model they will implement as an instructor.
